How do your extracurricular activities help in this job?

Question RES-107

You've listed several extracurricular activities: a technical club, event coordination and sports. How are they relevant to this job?

Show hints

Pick one or two activities and link each to a specific skill with an example.

Show the explanation

Model answer.

What the interviewer wants. Extracurriculars show skills that marks do not: teamwork, leadership, time management, initiative and handling pressure. The interviewer wants to see whether you can connect them to the job, rather than just listing them.

How to answer

  1. Choose one or two activities most relevant to the role. You do not need to cover all of them.
  2. For each, describe a specific situation and what you did.
  3. Link it to a skill the job needs.

Sample answer (replace with your real activities)
"Two of them are directly useful.

As [role] of our technical fest's [event] in [year], I was responsible for [e.g. arranging equipment, coordinating with eight volunteers and handling registrations for around 150 participants]. On the event day, [a specific problem, e.g. the projector in one hall failed], and I [what you did, e.g. moved that session to another room and informed the participants through the group]. That taught me to plan for things going wrong and to stay calm while fixing them, which matters in site and project work.

Playing [sport] for the college team taught me to perform under pressure and to support teammates when things are not going well. We practised [frequency] alongside full coursework, so I had to manage my time carefully."

Tips

  • Use concrete numbers only if they are accurate.
  • Be ready to discuss anything you listed. If you wrote "member of robotics club" but attended only two meetings, either remove it or describe it honestly.
  • For technical clubs, prepare to explain one thing you built or learned there.

What to avoid

  • Listing activities with no explanation ("I was part of many clubs").
  • Claiming leadership titles you did not hold. These are easy to verify with your college.

Likely follow-up. "What was the most difficult moment while organising that event?" Prepare one short STAR-style story.
